What is shadow work?

Shadow work is the practice of healing and self-growth through accepting and making an active commitment to work through issues you or society has deemed unacceptable, from a place of compassion for what you have experienced.

Why is it important to do shadow work?

We have all experienced things that have in some way shaped or formed our opinions and by allowing yourself to work through these ‘dark parts’ without judgment or shame, you will be allowing yourself to expand, helping you view the world and yourself from a different perspective.

Shadow work is a long and lengthy journey, one I believe we are always on! There are always going to be new parts to process within shadow work and sometimes you will need to revisit old parts you had previously dealt with. The important thing is to remember these are not setbacks but new opportunities to invite transformation and change into your life through healing.

Here are my top tips for creating a positive shadow work experience:

1. Get rid of any form of shame! You are taking amazing steps to better yourself and though it may be confronting there is no shame in what you are doing.

2. Become aware of your shadow! You might achieve this by thinking of someone who angers you and reflecting on what qualities you possibly share or revisiting your childhood and asking what aspects you feel had a negative impact on you.

3. Embrace your shadow self. Once you are aware of your shadow it is important not to shame it for the experience you have had! Instead, accept it as a part of who you are and begin the work for a better you.

4. Identify and use your triggers! Running away from your triggers will only add fuel to the fire. It is important to face your triggers head-on so you can work through the emotional reaction they cause for you! This will slowly allow triggers to have less effect on you, helping you to move forward in a positive direction.

These are some basic starting points for your journey but always remember to be kind to yourself! The more you become aware of your shadow and accept it, the less power it holds over you, giving you the opportunity to be a conscious being. 💕
